Himachal Pradesh, Assam Bypolls Results 2021 Live Coverage: In a setback for BJP in Himachal Pradesh, the opposition Congress has won all three assembly seats as well as the Mandi parliamentary seat. The Congress retained Fatehpur and Arki Assembly seats while it wrested the Jubbal-Kotkhai seat from the BJP. In Fatehpur, Congress candidate Bhawani Singh Pathania got 24449 votes while BJP’s Baldev Thakur polled 18660 votes. Independent candidate Dr. Rajan Sushant got 12927 votes. In Arki, Congress candidate Sanjay received 30798 votes while BJP’s got Rattan Pal Singh got 27579 votes. From Jubbal-Kotkhai, Congress candidate Rohit Thakur got 29955 votes while rebel BJP leader Chetan Singh Bragta who contested as Independent candidate stood second by polling 23662 votes. BJP candidate could only get 2584 votes. In Mandi parliamentary seat, Congress candidate Pratibha Singh got 369565 votes while BJP candidate Brig Kushal Chand Thakur received 362075 votes in a tight contest.
In Assam, the BJP has won Thowra, Bhabanipur, Mariani while its ally UPPL has won Gossaigaon and Tumulpur seat. From Thowra, BJP candidate Sushanta Borgohain defeated nearest rival Independent candidate Dhaijya Konwar by a margin of 30561 votes. Borgohain polled 54956 votes while Knowar got 24395 votes. The Congress candidate Monuranjan Konwar got 5892 votes. From Gossaigaon, BJP ally UPPL’s candidate Jiron Basumatary got 58769 votes, AIUDF’s Khairul Anam Khandakar got 19255 votes and Congress candidate Jowel Tudu polled 30517 votes. BPF’s Dhruba Kumar Brahma Narzary got 20435 votes. From Bhabanipur, BJP candidate Phanidhar Talukdar got 64200 votes while Congress party’s Sailendra Nath Das got 38559 votes. AIUDF candidate Jubbar Ali got 6430 votes. From Mariani, Congress turncoat Rupjyoti Kurmi won on a BJP ticket by a margin of 40104 votes. Kurmi got 55489 votes, and Congress candidate Luhit Konwar polled 15385 votes. From Tamulpur, UPPL candidate Jolen Daimary got 86678 votes while Gana Suraksha Party’s Brajendra Nath Deka received 13573 votes. Congress candidate Bhaskar Dahal got 7763 votes.
An estimated 73.38 per cent of electors voted in bye-elections to five Assembly constituencies in Assam on October 30. The assembly constituencies are Gossaigaon, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thowra. The Bhabanipur seat had recorded the highest voter turnout of 78 per cent, followed by Gossaigaon (77.37 per cent), Thowra (75.07 per cent) and Mariani (69.81 per cent) and Tamulpur (67.88 per cent). In Himachal Pradesh, the Jubbal-Kotkhai seat registered the highest polling percentage of 78.75 while the lowest voter turnout of 57.73 per cent was recorded in the Mandi Lok Sabha seat. The polling percentage in Fatehpur, Arki and Jubbal-Kotkhai were 66.2, 64.97 and 78.75 respectively.
In Assam, 31 candidates were in the fray, of whom eight each are in Gossaigaon and Bhabanipur, six in Tamulpur, five in Thowra and four in Mariani. The five seats fell vacant due to resignations and the deaths of legislators. The BJP had fielded its candidates in three seats leaving the other two to alliance partner UPPL. The Congress put up nominees in all five. The prominent contestants include Rupjyoti Kurmi, Sushanta Borgohain, Phanidhar Talukdar (all BJP); Luhit Konwar and Jowel Tudu (both Congress); Jubbar Ali and Khairul Anam Khandakar (both AIUDF) and Jiron Basumatary of the UPPL. A total of six candidates, including Ambika Shyam of the Rashtriya Lokniti Party, Munshi Ram Thakur of the Himachal Jankranti Party and Independents Anil Kumar and Subhash Mohan Snehi, were in the fray from the Mandi seat.
