Assam Assembly Elections 2021 Phase 2 Polling Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today campaigned in Kokrajhar in Assam. He said that the BJP is set for a grand victory in Phase-I polls. The PM said that the NDA government is working for welfare of Assam with the mantra of ‘sabka saath sabka vikas sabka vishwas’. “People of Assam have given blessings to NDA in 1st phase of polling. In the 1st phase, Assam has put a stamp on grand victory of NDA,” he said. He said that people have shown a Red Card to Congress in the state. “Football is very popular among youth here. If I’ve to speak in their language, I would say that the people have yet again shown a Red Card to Congress and its Mahajot. People of Assam trust NDA for development, peace, security of the state. This is an election between the ‘maha jhooth’ of Mahajot and ‘maha vikas’ of Double Engine,” said PM Modi. Former MoS Railways and BJP leader Rajen Gohain and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal today cast their votes from respective constituencies. Talking to reporters, Ajmal said hit out at the BJP over Bangladeshi infiltrators issue. He said, “PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have said that they’ll send Bangladeshi infiltrators back. I want to ask them how many Bangladeshis were sent back till now? I challenge them to tell if even 100 Bangladeshis have been sent back in the last 5 years. They are the ones who get them here.” Yesterday, Home Minister Amit Shah had attacked Ajmal saying that he won’t let Assam to become a hub of infiltrators.

Meanwhile, around 27.45 per cent voting has been recorded till 11am in 39 assembly constituencies where polling is underway in Assam for the phase-2 election. In all, 345 candidates (Read: Key candidates in Phase-2), including 26 women, are in the fray in this phase. Total 175 candidates are fighting the phase two elections from 15 seats in the three districts of Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar. Algapur has the highest 19 candidates. The elections is being held amid tight security with 310 companies of forces being deployed for the second phase. A total of 73,44,631 voters will decide the fate of 345 candidates. Of them, 37,34,537 are males and 36,09,959 females, while 135 are third gender voters. Total 10,592 polling stations have been set up in 5,774 premises. There are 556 polling stations where only women officials will be deployed, while there are 117 model polling stations. The webcasting facility will be available at 5,315 polling stations.

The ruling BJP is contesting in 34 seats and its allies, the AGP, in six and the UPPL, in three, with friendly contests in four constituencies-two each with the AGP and the UPPL. The Congress is contesting in 27, its partners the AIUDF in eight and BPF in four. The newly formed Assam Jatiya Parishad is contesting in 17 seats while 174 independents are also in the fray. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that the Congress party-led Grand Alliance will implement its poll promise of ‘five guarantees’. The ‘five guarantees’ include ‘nullifying’ the CAA in the state, providing five lakh government jobs to youths in five years, 200 units of free electricity, raising the daily- wage of tea garden workers from the current Rs 193 to Rs 365 and Rs 2,000 per month to homemakers. On the other hand, the BJP has been banking on development work done in the past five years and certain schemes promised in its 2021 Sankalp Patra. The promises include free education, flood-free Assam, scooty/cycle to girl students and increased financial assistance to pregnant tea garden community women.
