New Delhi: In the current market when the aspirations are growing all sides, two big motorcycle manufacturer, Harley and Triumph made their debut in 350-500cc market with Indian engines from Hero and Bajaj, respectively.
The Harley-Davidson X440 is the first taste of Hero MotoCorp’s capabilities when it comes to building a premium motorcycle, and from a sheer engineering standpoint, it makes a superb first impression. To compete with Royal Enfield, this motorcycle was entirely developed in India by Hero at its Centre for Innovation and Technology with inputs from Harley in Milwaukee.
Similarly, the new Triumph Speed 400 is an extremely different motorcycle compared to what Royal Enfield currently has on sale in India. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Bajaj is clearly going after Royal Enfield’s giant share of the 350-500cc market in India.
Engine Performance
The Harley x440 comes into action with its single-cylinder, air-oil cooled engine, carrying the classic Harley-Davidson DNA that enthusiasts adore. Packing a 440 cc engine, this powerhouse promises an unforgettable experience on the road. With 38 Nm of torque delivered at a low 4000 rpm, the x440 exhibits effortless acceleration, making it a beast to conquer city streets and country roads alike.
On the opposite side, the Triumph Speed 400 showcases a liquid-cooled, 4-valve, DOHC, single-cylinder engine with a slightly lower displacement of 398.15 cc. While it may have a smaller engine size, its 37.5 Nm of torque, peaking at 6500 rpm, ensures a lively and spirited performance, emphasizing the thrill of higher revs.
Gearbox and dynamics
Both the contenders come equipped with 6-speed gearboxes, a testament to their ability to adapt to various riding conditions. The Harley x440’s gear shifts are expected to provide a visceral connection with the road, suitable for riders seeking a raw and engaging experience.
On the other hand, the Triumph Speed 400 embraces a wet, multi-plate, slip & assist clutch, reflecting its modern engineering and focus on a smoother, more refined ride. This combination promises precision and control during gear changes, enhancing rider confidence through every curve.
Cooling systems
The Harley x440 upholds its legacy with an air and oil cooling system, a reminder of traditional motorcycling and the charisma that comes with it. Nostalgic riders will appreciate this classic touch, basking in the authenticity of the ride while relishing the mechanical harmony.
In contrast, the Triumph Speed 400 adopts liquid cooling, showcasing the brand’s commitment to modernity and efficiency. This contemporary approach ensures optimal thermal management, allowing riders to push the limits without compromising performance.
Instrumentation and connectivity
The Harley x440 boasts of a digital instrument console, offering riders a wealth of information at their fingertips. Additional features such as Bluetooth connectivity and WiFi provide a seamless connection between the bike and the rider’s smartphone, allowing for easy access to calls, messages, and navigation.
On the other hand, the Triumph Speed 400 adopts a more traditional analogue instrument console, yet there is no information provided about its other technological features. As the industry embraces connectivity and digital innovation, this aspect may be an area for the Speed 400 to further explore.
Features and safety
While both motorcycles offer impressive performance and innovation, the Harley x440 takes the lead with its plethora of additional features designed to enhance the rider’s experience.
With Switchable ABS, riders on the Harley x440 can tailor their braking preferences to match the road conditions, providing a sense of control and safety. Embracing the digital age, the x440 goes a step further with Internet Connectivity, offering seamless integration with smartphones, music streaming, and navigation, keeping riders connected on the go.
One of the standout features of the Harley x440 is its Artificial Exhaust Sound System, elevating the auditory experience and infusing the ride with a symphony of exhilaration. Meanwhile, the Service Due Indicator ensures riders stay on top of maintenance schedules, allowing for worry-free rides, mile after mile.
A Digital Speedometer, Odometer, and Tripmeter grace the console, providing accurate and real-time information, while the Digital Fuel Gauge and Clock keep riders well-informed throughout their journey.
The Harley x440, with its Gear Indicator, ABS Alert, and Neutral Position Indicator, empowers riders with crucial information at their fingertips, creating a more intuitive and immersive ride. The inclusion of a Passenger Footrest and Engine Kill Switch adds convenience and practicality.
In contrast, the Triumph Speed 400, while still an impressive machine, relies on a simpler approach with an analogue Speedometer and an LED display. While purists may appreciate the classic charm of such instrumentation, those seeking a more technologically advanced and feature-rich ride will find the Harley x440 to be an enticing proposition.
