The automotive industry, the vehicle types and the consumer demand and behavior are undergoing rapid changes. They impact the auto dealerships in a big way. In order to bring standardization in the Indian auto retailing sector and facilitate data driven intelligence for the customers, ETAuto’s Top 100 Power Dealers List 2022 brings out the ranking of the leading dealerships across the country.
The dealerships surveyed for this process are of different business sizes and from all regions of the country. According to the research, over a third or 37% are large dealers (revenue of INR 700 crore and above), 31% medium dealers (revenue between INR 400 crore and INR 700 crore), 14.2% small dealers (revenue between INR 200 crore and INR 400 crore) and 17% are micro dealers with revenue of up to INR 200 crore. The sample respondents are also democratically spread across segments like two-wheelers, passenger and commercial vehicles.
About 43% dealers in the ranking list have Maruti Suzuki as at least one of their brands. Region-wise, the list is dominated by 33% dealers from North, 30% from West and 21% from South India. Only 13% dealers made it to the list from East India followed by 3% dealers from Central India.
Ranked # 1 in the Top 100 List is Kataria Automobiles with an annual Group revenue of INR 3364 crore in FY21. The Gujarat-based dealer has also entered the EV retail business with Ather Energy by selling 124 units in FY21.
The study adopted multiple methods including an online survey through questionnaires to over 700 dealer principals across the country sent by ETAuto and automobile manufacturers. However, only half or around 350 responded to the online survey. This was further processed by our research team and after many layers of filters eventually 200 of them were interviewed over the phone. The information was further validated from the data of the OEMs and Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).
One of the significant trends that the ETAuto report captures is the impact of the pandemic on the performance of the dealerships. Most of them lost business and revenue. One such example is the Chennai-based T V Sundram Iyengar & Sons. Its annual Group revenue fell to INR 2462 crore in FY21 from INR 4222 crore in FY20. While the Group had been at number 1 position of the Top 100 Power Dealers List in 2018 and 2019, the Coronavirus singed everybody’s business and spared none.
Sadly, a lot of dealers were also reluctant to participate in the survey and did not wish to discuss their performance. This included many well-deserving leaders as well who have been regulars on our list in the past. In most cases, financial details of their business were not updated either on their respective websites or at the government’s MCA website. Even without their cooperation, we tried to find their relevant information from all possible reliable sources and succeeded in many cases.
For instance, the Sai Service Group at the fifth position in the list did not participate in the survey. However, according to ETAuto resources, the Mumbai-based dealer of Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj and KTM clocked annual revenue of INR 2256 crore in FY21.

As a part of the Top 100 Power Dealers List, ETAuto studies 200 dealerships. About 17% of them were micro dealers (revenue upto INR 200 crore ), medium dealers accounting for 31% of the participants (dealership group with revenue of INR 400 crore to INR 700 crore), saw a moderate 14% drop in revenue. Large dealers (Dealership Group with revenue of INR 700 crore and above) who constitute 37% of the participants, witnessed their top line fall by 12.75% in the period under review.
An assessment by ETAuto.com in its Top 100 Power Dealer List indicates that about 80% of the 200 dealerships that participated in the process are ready for the coming change and willing to expand to electric vehicles retails. Only 7% expressed disinterest while the other 13% were non-committal, the report said.
An assessment by ETAuto.com of its Top 100 Power Dealer List shows that the dealers of the future are certainly going to be omni-channel or phygital. For most of the 200 respondents, about 14% of their sales were digitally influenced during the financial year 2020-2021. It was also found that both the buyers and the retailers have outgrown the generic prior platforms in the sales process. It becomes clear that change is necessary to stay in tune with the new and emerging consumer expectations.
